April Update

April is such a fun month, filled with planting! With the funky weather, it was a little nerve-racking hardening off the young plants, but they mostly did well – a few failures with some cold weather crops, like the poor radishes and cauliflower who didn’t understand where the cold weather was. However, they are coming around, even if you don’t see them in your first box! The lettuce and spinach are doing beautifully, and the beets, turnips, and onions are taking shape quickly. The first box is always the least diverse and least bountiful, but I am happy to report that it is looking pretty good! I’m so excited!

I’d also like to mention that we are planting the summer time crops – eggplant, tomatoes, peppers, and various squashes are already in the ground, and they are looking like they will take wonderfully!

March Update

February was a strange month this year. It was like Mother Nature didn’t want to do winter this year. We were a bit worried that pests and disease were going to be an issue due to the lack of cold weather, but temperatures did drop enough eventually that we’re confident it shouldn’t be an issue!

March has also been quite crazy this year with the warm/cold/snow “storm” – it’s been quite the rollercoaster to say the least. Most of our time has been spent testing and replenishing the soil, so the warm days were quite welcome while working outdoors. We have been expanding, so we’ve done a lot of digging, and I can assure you the soil definitely froze! Some point soon, we will be installing a new fence to keep out the local groundhog, Shadow.

After we prepped our soil, we transplanted our Cole crops (lettuce, cauliflower, spinach, kale, etc.). Turnips, beets, radishes, potatoes, and onions also made their way outside this month. The different squashes are inside getting ready for the hot days later this year, as well as the yummy eggplant and peppers.

As always, let us know if you have any questions!

Best,
Gourdgeously Good

January Update

January has been quite warm this year (comparatively speaking; winter is winter), so we’ve got a lot of weeding done! There is always more to do, but it’s nice to get a jump on things! Besides weeding, we’ve been planting our Cole crops, like cauliflower and kale. We also planted lettuce, spinach, turnips, eggplant, and various peppers. All of these newbie plants are starting their lives under our grow lights, but will be joining the outdoors in March and April.

Next month, February, is the month of snow usually. Currently, the outlook doesn’t look like too much will be going on (only a few days on the calendar suggesting the possibility of snow), but that usually changes quickly. As per usual, we will venture out on the “warm” days to check the gardens for any brave weedy material, but this month is mainly dedicated to our little indoor babies, prepping them for the big transplant.
